WORK EXPERIENCE

1988 to present Olivet Nazarene University, Bourbonnais, IL Chairman of the Department of Art and Digital Media for 16 years. Responsibilities include: budgets, departmental reports, faculty evaluations, program growth and development. Achievements: built graphics program from infancy stage to viable concentration with state of the art labs and equipment. Photography evolved from one course into a developed concentration with dark room, digital, commercial and photo-journalism encompassing several departments on campus. Scholarship money increased to include incoming freshmen through juniors approximately three fold during last five years. Under my leadership internships were developed for digital graphics and photography concentrations and developed and achieved departmental strategic goals. The entire department was completely renovated to accommodate the growing needs of the students and department, along with a newly redesigned/renovated Brandenburg Art Gallery. With the growth of the digital media program a separate and new facility was constructed using “industry standards” software and equipment in graphics and photography as well as an academic cross-over with the communications department. 1986-1988 Bradley University, Peoria, Illinois. Taught Design/Color Theory and Art Appreciation. Served on Graphic Design Committee for Freshman through Senior level. Curate of the art gallery.

 

1986-1988 Illinois Central College, East Peoria Illinois. Taught Basic Drawing, Introduction to Art, Figure Drawing/Advanced Figure Drawing and Printmaking. Organized and founded “Friends of Printmaking,” a non-profit organization for the betterment of printmaking in the Peoria area. This included raising funds and soliciting artists to participate in the development of this organization. Started a printmaking program at Illinois Central College in the Fall of 1987

 

1986-1988 Peoria Chiefs Professional Baseball, affiliated minor league club of the Chicago Cubs. Message Center Operator – Responsibilities included: programming in and the operation of an animations computer. Programmed cartoon animations and operated message center located on scoreboard during Chiefs baseball games. Other responsibilities included: layout and graphics of Chiefs newsletter. 1984-1985 University of South Dakota, Vermilion, South Dakota. Taught Art Appreciation, served on the foundation committee for Freshman/Sophomore art programs, cataloged slide library, worked with South Dakota Arts Outreach program, designed sets for the theater department, organized and supervised orientation program for high school students preparing for study at the university and worked in the university galleries.

 

1984-1985 Vermillion Area Arts Council, Vermillion, South Dakota. Acting board member and featured artist, held various workshops for children and young adults. 1984-1985 BottomLine Studio, Vermillion, South Dakota. Was owner and operator, taught painting and drawing to adults and young people. Held self-improvement workshops and private lessons for students. Also handled matting and framing for public, sold art to the public, advised area art programs in pubic schools. BottomLine Studio also worked with handicapped people and the aging.

 

1982-1986 University of South Dakota, Vermillion, South Dakota. Set-up and built the papermaking workshop in the University Art Department. Co-op teaching assistant in Basic Design, Beginning Drawing (was solely responsible for one section each semester), foundation committee work for Freshman/Sophomore art programs, headed committee for graduate problems. Worked with South Dakota Arts Council and their Outreach programs. Worked in the university galleries.

 

1981-1982 University of South Dakota, Vermillion, South Dakota. Graduate teaching assistant in printmaking (both lithography and intaglio). 1979-1980 Illinois State University, Normal Illinois. Under graduate teaching assistant in printmaking.

WORKSHOPS & WORKSHOP ORGANIZATION 2000 Participated in an invitational watercolor workshop, where several professional watercolorists were asked to present their techniques to amateur and professional artists. This event challenged everyone to be more than they are by experimenting with various techniques presented.1994 Organized a visiting artist summer program for Olivet students who were encouraged to pursue arts in a professional manner. The focus was on new research and marketing skills for up and coming artists. This was open to community people and professional artists. The attendance was over 185 participants.

1993 Presented summer workshops at Rain Tree Gallery on watercolor and innovative concepts. These were a series of visiting artists who came in to teach and judge works of art for regional artists. 1991 Presented workshop on Watercolor Techniques, This was a summer event that took place in Bartonville, IL at a visiting artist’s studio. This workshop was billed as a regional event.

1988-89 Paper making workshops at Peoria Art Guild, Each three day workshop included history of paper making, how build own equipment and the making of paper from beaten pulp.1987 Sun Foundation, Washburn, Illinois. I was a visiting artist in a three-day summer workshop program. Taught “Pigment Drawings in the Earth,” using colored pigments to create Native American-type drawings native to the Peoria tribes. Program was “Art in the Woods” and students made drawings on or around trails in the woods at the Sun foundation, each drawing told a story of surroundings. Held June

1987. 1987 Peoria Art Guild. Taught painting and drawing classes for young adults and children on three different workshops. Also, figure drawing for adults.

1987 Organized and conducted four paper making workshops for adults. Each workshop was a two-day program, including paper making history, where to get supplies, how to build supplies and the making of paper by hand. 1987 Central Illinois Arts Festival, “One Sensational Weekend.” Organized and conducted a one-day workshop. Built and painted large mural of the Peoria skyline. Public paid a fee to help with the painting of the mural. August 1987.

1987 Held two one-day printmaking workshops at Illinois Central College. Demonstrated printmaking and participated with the making of prints. Mono-types and Collographs.

1984-1985 Organized and conducted five self-improvement workshops for adults and children. Workshops were for people to improve their own self- worth through art. Held at Bottom Line Studios, sponsored by Vermilion Area Arts Council.
